I worked in Dr. Signe Bray's Lab as a Summer Student for 2020 and 2021. The lab investigates brain development in school aged children. As we are unable to conduct most of the in-person research due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, I am assisted with more technical aspects remotely including data management, and assisting with systematic reviews of literature. I also completed MRI Safety training, and currently hold my level 1 certification. Our paper is linked here.
In the summer of 2019, I had the opportunity to work in Dr. Gregory Cairncross' lab to study Glioblastoma Multiforme and the cellular precursors of brain cancer. Our project focused on subventricular zone cells and their role in cancer initiation.
The Bessie F. Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI) is a program run at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. The ISSI program invites 80 high school graduates from around the world to participate in world class research labs for the month of July. I was able to attend this program in 2017, where I worked in a laboratory that was developing a melanoma vaccine. The publication from this experience can be provided upon request.
Due to COVID-19, the 2020 ISSI program was altered to an online version with volunteer alumni mentors. Myself and my co-mentor from Mexico were paired with 3 high school graduates from Brazil, England, and Switzerland, and we designed a project measuring the impact of COVID-19 on sleep patterns. In this project, we designed an online survey that was completed by 200 people around the world, and analyzed the data to determine the impact of COVID on sleep. The publication from this experience can be provided upon request.
I had the opportunity to speak about my ISSI experiences travelling to Israel, participating in cutting edge research, and representing Canada at a Weizmann Canada Fundraiser in 2018.
